Dr. S. Upendra Rao obtained Ph.D in Computer Architecture from IIT-KGP and
was the youngest middle management officer (systems analyst) in the Tata Steel
bearings division. He was youngest associate professor of CS in Andhra
University College of Engineering; youngest Director of the computer centre in
Hyderabad Central University and, as Joint Director-IT, Head of R&D, the
youngest top executive in the history of SBI.
He served as GM- IT-Strategy, Architecture & planning division of SBI; Head
of e-Learning; Loan Life Cycle Management, Enterprise and Technology
Architecture, and IT-infrastructure divisions in SBI.
Dr. Rao also served as adjunct professor of NIT, Warangal, and national visiting
professor of ISTE. He served as technical and academic board member of Shri
Padmavathi Mahila University, Tirupathi; JNTU, Hyderabad; Osmania
University; and the Department of Electronics, Government of India. He was
also a board member at ACC and created "C" level course.
He published six books; 55 research papers; over 40 articles; attended over 60
invited talks; conducted 13 national level seminars; and won several awards and

University, Hyderabad; IG Open University, Delhi; distance education program
of University of Hyderabad; IDRBT; National Clearing Corporation of India;
and the National E-Governance Programme (NeGP).
Some of Dr. Rao's achievements include establishing the first parallel
computing laboratory in HCU; establishing a training institute in State Bank of
Patiala; establishing an innovation centre at FinTech in SBI; establishing a
start-up centre that aligned with the Prime Minister's vision of the "Make-in-
India" program; initiating an incubation centre in Hyderabad and Mumbai for
aspiring entrepreneurs; establishing a Centre of Excellence at SBIICM with
private participation; establishing a Centre of Excellence for open source
technologies; and establishing the largest Rs. 600 crore Captive Data Centre in
He is a fellow of the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance and is listed in
Asia's "Who-is-Who" in IT and has been honoured with the International Open
Group President award for Federated Dynamic Architecture Integration (FDAI)
model in the area of Enterprise Architecture.
Dr. Rao currently works as the Chief Technology Officer of SBI.
